Steve Wiest: The Genre-Bending Trombone Visionary Shaping Modern Jazz

Multiple Grammy-nominated trombonist, composer, arranger, author and educator Steve Wiest stands out as one of modern jazz’s most imaginative creative voices. Blending the power of big-band tradition with sci-fi storytelling, funk energy and fearless harmonic invention, Wiest has built a career defined by bold musical ideas and wide-ranging artistic curiosity. His journey includes formative years as a featured trombonist and writer with Maynard Ferguson, leadership of the University of North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band, and acclaimed Grammy-nominated work including the original composition Ice-Nine and his arrangement of Bésame Mucho. Louis Armstrong: The Voice and Trumpet That Changed Jazz
Louis Daniel Armstrong, affectionately known as “Satchmo” or “Pops”, was one of the most influential figures in jazz history. Rising from poverty in New Orleans, he became a groundbreaking trumpeter, vocalist and bandleader whose expressive improvisation transformed jazz from ensemble-based performance into a powerful solo art form. With his unmistakable gravelly voice, dazzling trumpet style and charismatic stage presence, Armstrong helped popularise scat singing and brought jazz to audiences around the world. Songs such as “What a Wonderful World” and “Hello, Dolly!” remain timeless reminders of his warmth, artistry and enduring cultural impact.

This week John talk's about Alex Hill

The Forgotten Jazz Pioneer of Chicago and Harlem
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on 19 April 1906, Alex Hill became an important figure in the Chicago jazz scene of the 1920s and later worked at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Though largely forgotten today, his contribution to early jazz as a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader remains significant.
Hill was taught piano by his mother and began his career working with Alphonso Trent before organising his own band in 1924. He later served as musical director for a travelling revue and spent time in Hollywood playing atmosphere music on silent film sets. He also performed with New Orleans trumpeter Mutt Carey’s Jeffersonians before moving to Chicago.
In Chicago, Hill played with Carroll Dickerson, Jimmy Wade, and Jimmie Noone, and appeared on notable South Side sessions with Albert Wynn’s Gut Bucket Five and Junie Cobb. A standout 1929 session produced “South Bound” and “Dyin’ With The Blues”.
As an early jazz composer and arranger, Hill collaborated with Fats Waller on songs including “I’m Crazy ’bout My Baby” and “Baby Brown”. He made important recordings with Eddie Condon in the early 1930s and wrote “Long About Midnight”, a hit for Cab Calloway, as well as “Keep A Song In Your Soul” for Jack Teagarden and Red Nichols.
Among his best-known compositions were “I Would Do Anything For You”, recorded by Billy Banks’ Rhythmakers in 1932 and later by Benny Goodman, and “Beau Koo Jack”, written for Louis Armstrong. At the height of his fame as a bandleader, Hill was struck down with tuberculosis in 1936 and died the following year at just 31.
American jazz drummer and historian Hal Smith joins a two-part celebration of Alex Hill’s music next week.
